Introduction & Warning

This guide will be about symptoms of ADHD, potential treatments and personal experiences. I will go through each section one by one.

If you don’t like long threads, then leave now. If you believe that ADHD doesn’t exist, then leave now aswell. Because this thread will be of no use to you.

Part 1A: What is ADHD?

As defined by healthline.com:

“Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health disorder that can cause above-normal levels of hyperactive and impulsive behaviors. People with ADHDmay also have trouble focusing their attention on a single task or sitting still for long periods of time. Both adults and children can have ADHD”

Part 1B: What causes ADHD?

Not much is known on the exact things that cause ADHD, as it is a very complex condition that affects a very complex part of the body, which is the brain.

However, we do know about somethings, which are correlated with ADHD, such as:

- Smoking during pregnancy

Children from pregnancies where the mother smoked have a 2.4x higher chance of developing ADHD when compared to children from pregnancies where the mother did not smoke cigarettes.

This isn’t static either. From the data, it can be inferred that the probability can Increase or decrease, based on smoking habits and luck.

- Inhalation of lead during development

Children with adhd are commonly found to have higher levels of lead in their blood when compared to kids who do not have adhd.

Lead is an extremely dangerous neurotoxin when inhaled in large amounts during young ages. Lead exposure is correlated with lower intelligence, higher amounts of criminality and in general, more mental issues.

- Overconsumption Of media in the form of the internet and video games

There has been shown to be a minor link between the consumption of media and symptoms of adhd.

- Genetics

ADHD is found to be a highly heritable condition. Which obviously means that your parents having the condition, carries a big risk of that condition being transferred onto you.

- Gut health

ADHD symptoms can be linked to issues in your gut.

Part 2A: Symptoms (“Tell tale symptoms“)

I’m firstly going to get into the “telltale symptoms” of ADHD, which are:

- Short attention span

- restlessness

- impulsive behaviour due to bad impulse control

- Hyperfocus

Part 2B: Symptoms (Side effects)

This section will be based around the side effects of the main 3 symptoms listed above. These “side effects” include but are not limited to:

- Quick to anger / easily irritated
- Irregular sleep patterns
- Racing thoughts
- forgetfulness
- Brain fog / inability to think
- Inability to meetup with deadlines / set deadlines
- Overeating
- Undereating
- Depression
- Talkative
- High energy

These side effects are all products of the main symptoms listed as “tell-tale” symptoms.

For example, being quick to anger can be a side effect of being impulsive.

Racing thoughts, being talkative and being high energy, can be side effects of Restlessness (hyperactivity).

Overeating can be a side effect of both impulsivity and restlessness. Undereating can be a side effect of Hyperfocus.

You don’t have to have all these things, nor are all these things the only side effects that come with adhd. However, if you have more than 1 of the “tell-tale” symptoms and more than 2 of the ones that are listed as side effects, see a doctor for adhd screening,

Part 3A: ADHD screening

By this point you might be wondering how you can get an ADHD screening.

To be honest, you probably already answered that. For those who are asking, go to your doctor and tell them that you are feeling symptoms of ADHD and want to be tested.

You likely will be referred to a specialist that is legally allowed to screen you for ADHD. If you do get tested, what to expect is a form of an IQ test, which focuses on all areas of learning, problem solving and attention. They will basically take a full diagnostic of your mental strengths and weaknesses.

From what I’ve heard alongside my own personal experience, having weak scores within the areas of focus and memory will likely get you diagnosed with ADHD.

If you plan on faking adhd for drugs, don’t think that bombing everything will get you diagnosed. If you’re obviously able to go through a doctor yourself and make it to the office, functioning normally across the way, they won’t buy your tricks. Functioning normally, and then scoring poorly on problem solving, memory and attention span will give you a much better chance.

You may have to pay to get tested. If you’re legitimately poor and don’t live in a 3rd world shithole, you’ll likely be able to get your test + potential prescription covered by the healthcare system of your country.

Part 3B: ADHD drugs (ranking included)

The first natural step from a diagnosis is treatment. The main go-to treatment for adhd is through drugs.

There are a large amount of ADHD drugs that are available on the market, all of which can be separated by category and drug family.

Stimulants

Stimulants are a class of drugs that generally increase the activity of the central nervous system.

Within the context of ADHD and ADHD drugs, stimulants are by far the most prescribed drugs for ADHD and are the tip of the spear for most doctors when it comes to treating the condition.

For the purpose of relevance, I won’t elaborate on Drug families within the realm of stimulants that are not used for ADHD.

Methylphenidate family

-
Ritalin (Generic Ritalin will be listed as Methylphenidate HCL)
- Ritalin LA & SR (Long acting & Sustained release)

- Concerta (Long acting Methylphenidate)
- Biphentin (Long acting Methylphenidate)
- Focalin (Dexmethylphenidate)
- Focalin XR (Long acting dexmethylphenidate)

I might be missing some, but you get the point.

Drugs within this family function by blocking the destruction of dopamine In your brain, which increases dopamine levels within your brain and therefore, improves or even outright eliminates the symptoms of ADHD.

Even though there are multiple drugs in this family that are long acting, they don’t all work the same.

Concerta works by releasing 18% of the total dosage in the short term (say next 30-60 minutes), while 72% gets released across the day (next 7-11 hours or so).

Concerta has to be swallowed whole. Taking apart the pill will destroy the release mechanism and therefore make the pill useless.

Ritalin SR works by slowing the digestion of Ritalin though added filler, which therefore keeps it in your system for longer, hence the term “sustained release”.

This however was developed a long time ago, around the 70’s-80’s and therefore is based on outdated drug release mechanisms. Which means that the release of the drug will not be consistent.

Due to it being a tablet and not a capsule, it can be easily crushed, which will basically turn it into normal Ritalin.

Ritalin LA works by releasing 50% in the first 30-60 minutes and 50% a few hours after that (around 3-4 hours)

Biphentin works in the same way as Ritalin LA, but with a ratio of 40:60 instead of 50:50.

Note: Not all people will respond to this class of drugs. There are a group of people who do not respond to methylphenidates, regardless of dosage.

I personally am one of them. If you feel no effects while on Ritalin, whether it be positive or negative effects, then you might as well cross out this entire family of drugs from your bucket list, because your body cannot make use of the active Ingredient.

Amphetamines

- Adderall (generic will be listed as mixed salts amphetamine)
- Adderall XR (Generic will be listed as the same as of above but with XR at the end) (extended release)
- Vyvanse (Extended release)
- Dextroamphetamine
- Dextroamphetamine spansules (extended release)
- Desoxyn

Drugs within this family function by increasing dopamine production through direct stimulation of parts of your brain that control the creation and transport of dopamine and norepinephrine, which therefore suppresses or outright eliminates your adhd symptoms.

Unlike the previous family of drugs, the ratio of ingredients within each drug listed here are the key to what experience you will have while on them.

Adderall has a ratio of 75% Dextroamphetamine to 25% Levoamphetamine.

Dextroamphetamine has a ratio of 100% Dextroamphetamine to 0% levoamphetamine

Vyvanse is 100% Dextroamphetamine

Dextroamphetamine mainly impacts your mental state and is associated with the euphoria, focus and increased brain activity that is found with adhd drugs that contain amphetamines.

Levoamphetamine is associated with more of the physical effects that Amphetamine based ADHD drugs can have. Such as being more physically alert, restlessness, anxiety, chest pains, muscle aches, etc.

This is Mostly why Dextroamphetamine and vyvanse are considered to be smoother than adderall. This is also why adderall is abused for competitive activities.

L-Amphetamine can give you an important physical boost Ontop of the mental boost that Dextroamphetamine gives, at the cost of potential physical side effects.

Note: Desoxyn is literally methamphetamine and is therefore banned in most countries. The only place where it’s legal is the US I’m pretty sure and it is not considered a front line medication. It is a second-string medication.

Which basically means that your psychiatrist or doctor won’t even consider giving you a prescription for the drug unless you have burned through the entire methylphenidate family, have burned through the entire 1st-string of amphetamines and have burned through non-stimulant ADHD drugs.

You won’t get this drug. Unless you have extremely severe ADHD or are a master manipulator / liar.

Non-Stimulants

Obviously due to the name, non-stimulants are medications that fall outside the realm of stimulants. Why? I don’t know and that doesn’t matter.

There are multiple non-stimulant drugs used for ADHD such as:

- Wellbutrin
- Guanfacine
- Strattera

Strattera increases dopamine and norepinephrine levels in the brain and therefore, will alleviate your adhd symptoms. Strattera has been studied to not be as effective as stimulants for adhd however, so keep that in mind.

Wellbutrin blocks the destruction of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, but is considered to be less effective than stimulants. Especially Ritalin, which has the same purpose but larger effect on average.

Guanfacine works by activating the Alpha-2A andrenergic receptor in the brain. It’s recorded to be less effective than most stimulants.

Note: These drugs being recorded as less effective, does not mean that they cannot work for you. Brain chemistry and body chemistry determines the effectiveness of drugs.

Personal ranking

I have tried vyvanse, Ritalin and adderall. So far, my ranking of drugs is:

1. Vyvanse
2. Adderall
3. Ritalin

Vyvanse was by far the best. It was the most smooth, alongside it being the most consistent in effects. It made me extremely focused with laser vision. It increased my anger though.

Adderall is what I’m currently on. The first two genetics were utter garbage and did not work. Brand name adderall worked better but I can sense that 25mg is either too low or I have gained a tolerance for the drug. The mental effects from adderall have mostly dried up for me.

The physical side effects are restlessness and insomnia, even long after the mental effects have ceased.

Ritalin just didn’t work. There were no positive or negative effects with the drug, even at overdose levels, which is a clear sign that either the Generic I got was bunk or I’m a methylphenidate non responder. I’m leaning towards the generic being bunk, because one time on a high dose I felt euphoria 10-12 hours after by first dosage.

Your first port of call should be either Dextroamphetamine or vyvanse. Adderall is too hard as a drug imo. I can’t personally recommend Ritalin.

Part 4A: Side effects of all drugs and ending

Adhd drugs are a large spectrum when it comes to side effects.

Adderall can do damage to the heart and age your skin alongside making you restless.

Vyvanse/Dextroamphetamine can cause anger and anxiety.

Ritalin can make you have anxiety. The list goes on. In general, if you want to avoid side effects, then stick within your prescribed dosage range. If it isn’t working, then tweak it by no more than 10mg. More is not more in this situation. More is dangerous, possibly fatal.

Then there is the added fact of drug dependence and addiction, which is all but guaranteed if you abuse these drugs for a long period of time. Again, stay within the prescribed dosage range.

Don’t use these drugs to get high or get tweaked. Use these drugs to improve symptoms or help your academics. Using these drugs recreationally is a one way ticket to fucking yourself up in the long run.

Don’t constantly for higher dosages when you don’t need them. You will eventually come off as insincere, which leads to your doctor cutting you off.

A giant red flag that they are trained for is someone asking them for higher doses of instant release drugs, such as Ritalin or adderall. It’s obvious as to why this is the case. Instant release adhd drugs come in crushable tablet form, which can be easily abused and is commonly abused.

Don’t think that you’re the first person to ask your doctor for these drugs. Youre a rookie. Assume they suspect you and you’ll be ok.

That’s all I have to contribute. If you read this all, then good for you.

Theyre are basically the same, except one is extended release
That could be true. It’s best to try though. Different meds can potentially have different effects on you due to filler / release mechanisms. Generic vs brand name adderall wielded different results for me

Great thread. Will talk to my jew & see if I can get Vyvanse instead of Adderall. Does it work if you don't have ADHD though?

Stuff like vyvanse, Ritalin and adderall will just make you have extremely high amounts of dopamine and focus, if you don’t have adhd.
