The common arguments you hear are :
Blacks make up 13% of the population and yet 26% of police killings.
Defund the police
White Cops are inherently racist to black people.
Firstly yes it is true that black people are killed disproportionately to their percentage make up of the population, however men make up 50% of the population yet are 97% of fatal police shootings.
So why is this? The answer is obvious men are more violent thus more likely to be arrested.
These same reasons can be attributed to why police shoot more black people.
Black people make up 26.45% of total arrested people - which you’ll note is right around the percentage of fatal police shootings they made up at 26%. Not only this but they types of crimes black people were arrested for are more serious crimes which would thus increase the likelihood for police to use firearms more liberally.
Black people were 52% of the people arrested for murder in the US, 33.2% of aggravated assault both of these categories would make a police officer more likely to shoot.
Whereas vandalism, fraud and forgery all crimes that white people perpetrate most are non violent ones in most cases and would elicit calmer police responses.
