Yes anything that's not genetics is too easily gained as an advantage over other, so genetics rule in zero-sum games. Any non genetic advantage is quickly adopted by every competitor, essentially becoming a baseline standard.

Meritocracy is there to weed out the useless ones from the the people who have the potential to be productive members of a society. If you have the intellect, then you can have a higher quality of life, same thing if you have good looks.
