Collagen production

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19593638

"In treated animals, the extent of edema and the number of inflammatory cells were reduced (P < 0.05). The amount of collagen in graft treated with low-level laser were significantly higher than those of controls (P < 0.05) and were statistically more prominent on the 14th day after surgery. The mean count of fibroblasts was significantly higher in the low-laser therapy group within the 3rd day, showing a marked influx of fibroblasts into area. In conclusion, wound healing of the ADM appear to be positively affected by laser therapy."

(concentration of collagen)

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15654716

Skin textural improvement by digital imaging and surface profilometry is accompanied by increased collagen I deposition with reduced MMP-1 (collagenase) activity in the papillary dermis. This technique is a safe and effective non-painful non-ablative modality for improvement of photoaging.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19764893

The fibroblasts cultured with the keratinocyte conditioned medium, particularly with a combination of 630/850, increased collagen levels.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19587693

Results yielded a mean percent difference between LED-treated and non-LED-treated HRS of 31% in levels of type-1 procollagen and of -18% in MMP-1. Furthermore, profilometry quantification revealed that more than 90% of individuals showed a reduction in wrinkle depth and surface roughness, and, via a blinded clinical assessment, that 87% experienced a reduction in the Fitzpatrick wrinkling severity score after 12 LED treatments. No adverse events or downtime were reported. Our study showed that LED therapy reversed collagen downregulation and MMP-1 upregulation. These findings suggest that LED at 660 nm is a safe and effective collagen-enhancement strategy.

Acne: (most of these are with blue light as they have synergistic effects anti inflammatory + anti bacterial)

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24313686

At 1 month, >90% clearance or moderate improvement occurred in 22/50 (44%) patients in the LED group. There was no control group.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27762647 (states it is more efficient that salicylic acid for acne)

"The combined use of red and blue lights due to their anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties is a more efficient alternative for treating Acne vulgaris in relation to SA and proves more reliable and without side effects, improving the adolescents' skin health."

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23278295

"At the final visit at 12 weeks, both inflammatory and noninflammatory acne lesions had decreased significantly, by 77% and 54%, respectively, in the treatment group. No significant difference was observed in the control group.

Turns out I had a 13W LED lamp just sitting in storage plus a clamp that fits on my desk perfectly. 9 red LEDs and 3 blue. Peaks at 630, 660, 430, 460. I see some studies saying the blue is good for acne but worried about exposure to eyes so I removed them.

The reds are still bright as fuck on the eyes though. Straight up blinded me for a few minutes with just a few seconds on my face. Thankfully I also have a pair of tinted computer glasses which is doing the trick nicely.

Don't have time to comb through all the studies except I saw one saying there's possible tissue damage if you go too high wattage. What exactly is too much though? Mine is just a cheap Chinese made grow lamp off Amazon..

Bone growth

"In conclusion, LA promotes longitudinal bone growth in adolescent rats, suggesting that laser acupuncture may be a promising intervention for improving the growth potential for children and adolescents."

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28742438 systematic review (of 230 studies on 19met criteria)

A positive effect of low-level laser energy on bone regeneration within a certain relationship between dose and output power was found. LLLT stimulates cellular metabolism, increasing protein synthesis and subsequent bone regeneration. A high dose combined with low power or a low dose combined with high power appears to produce a positive effect.

"No significant difference in new cartilage formation and inflammation was found between the groups (p > 0.05). However, there was significantly more new bone formation in the experimental group (p < 0.05)." (your nose wont grow)

Cosmetic local fat reduction

"Based on this case series pilot investigation, the combination of 3 different wavelengths of LLL was effective for abdominal girth reduction in 100% of our subjects (P<0.001), without any side effects. Future studies will assess the long-term benefits of this laser combination for reduction of subcutaneous fat deposits."

Hair
"The meta-analysis included 8 studies comprising a total of 11 double-blinded randomized controlled trials.

The quantitative analysis showed a significant increase in hair density for those treated by LLLT versus sham group (SMD 1.316, 95% confidence interval, CI 0.993 to 1.639). The subgroup analysis demonstrated that LLLT increases hair growth in both genders, in both comb- and helmet-type devices, and in short- and long-term treatment course.

The subgroup analysis also showed a more significant increase of hair growth for the LLLT versus sham in the low-frequency treatment group (SMD 1.555, 95% CI 1.132 to 1.978) than in the high-frequency group (SMD 0.949, 95% CI 0.644 to 1.253).

The review was limited by the heterogeneity of included trials.

LLLT significantly increased hair density in AGA. The meta-analysis suggests that low treatment frequency by LLLT have a better hair growth effect than high treatment frequency. LLLT represents a potentially effective treatment for AGA in both male and female. The types of LLLT devices and LLLT treatment course duration did not affect the effectiveness in hair growth."

Is this the same wavelength as the lasercomb for hair?

Ten of 11 trials demonstrated significant improvement of androgenic alopecia in comparison to baseline or controls when treated with LLLT. In the remaining study, improvement in hair counts and hair diameter was recorded, but did not reach statistical significance. Two trials did not include statistical analysis, but showed marked improvement by hair count or by photographic evidence. Two trials showed efficacy for LLLT in combination with topical minoxidil. One trial showed efficacy when accompanying finasteride treatment. LLLT appears to be a safe, alternative treatment for patients with androgenic alopecia.

This is cool but also worrisome. So we can accidentally ruin our fat deposits in our face if we use whatever those wavelengths were? Any more details?

Thanks for the anecdote. How long did it take to see results? Do you still use it, why/why not?

Buy a red LED grow lamp and aim it at your face and neck for at least 30 minutes a day. Easy.

Result should be more collagen, better skin texture and elasticity.. aging slower. Any existing wrinkles should fade.

better hair also?
Yes but the light needs to penetrate the hair on your head so if you have a lot of hair already I'm not sure how well it will work.. as in diffuse baldcels vs norwooders. I heard lasers are better at getting deeper which is of course where the hair follicles lay, but have yet to look through the studies that compare low level laser with low level light. The only FDA approved device for hair loss is the HairMax and it uses lasers not simple LEDs. I believe the wavelength is 660 but don't quote me on that. Best is to use lasers AND leds so that you blanket cover the surface and penetrate deeper too.
