I don’t really know enough about the Byzantines but I feel Yugoslavia was a good idea but in practice it led to a lot of bloodshed. Ethnic divides will always exist and so groups should be able to have their own state if they want. If Kosovan Albanians want a state it’s their right and the same for Serbs in Bosnia
