I often get called young man more than any of my friends and I don't know what that means. Obviously, I mostly get called sir since most people don't say "young man", but I never hear my friends get called it. Service workers will be like "and what would you like young man" or "how is your day going young man", usually adult women 30+ though. I look a bit older than most of my friends and I mean I am a young man, I think young man applies to everyone still college age.
But also when I think young man I think under 18. Men go with the "sir", and women around my age usually just say "and for you?".

But also it's only on my mind because I got called it twice this morning buying coffee.
