September can bring some of the hottest temperatures of the year, said Todd Mogged, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
“We’re stuck between two low-pressure systems and the fronts in the Midwest have stalled out,” he said Wednesday.
The result is a hot, high-pressure mass of air above Southeast Texas and southwestern Louisiana that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
The forecasting service Weather.com is predicting 100 degrees for the area by Saturday. The National Weather Service says to expect highs perhaps in the mid-90s along the Gulf Coast, Mogged said, and certainly higher inland for places like Jasper.

Moisture in the forecast doesn’t reappear until Sunday or Monday, Mogged said.
Until then, the region will remain under the sinking air of the high-pressure system and will feel the result — continued heat.
One good thing about high pressure is that it keeps away tropical systems.
Mogged said a tropical system tried to form in the southern Gulf, but not much developed before it moved inland into Mexico.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Dorian picked up a little speed in moving off the Bahamas, which was devastated by its Category 5 strength. Dorian throttled back to a Category 2 after its stationary churn brought up cooler ocean water.
The peak of the Atlantic basin season is still 10 days away, Mogged said. Southeast Texas isn’t off the hook yet.
Hurricane Humberto, Sept. 12-14, 2007, formed and intensified faster than any other North Atlantic tropical system on record and reached Category 1 status before smashing into Southeast Texas.at High Island, eventually moving eastward into Louisiana and Mississippi. A cold front in Georgia snuffed it out.
The weather service also is tracking Tropical Storm Gabrielle, moving east from the Cape Verde Islands off Africa’s west coast. Mogged said Gabrielle is likely to be a “fish storm,” meaning it will remain over the Atlantic Ocean.
