The Miryang gang rape, known in South Korea as the Miryang middle school girls rape incident, was a criminal incident that occurred in Miryang, South Korea in 2004. At least 41 male high school students gang raped several middle school and high school girls over the course of 11 months.[1] The case provoked controversy due to police mistreatment of the victims and lenient handling of the offenders.[2]

The victims lived in Ulsan and Changwon, while the perpetrators were from Miryang and Changwon.[3] The perpetrators were initially believed to be members of a high school gang,[4] but little evidence for this was found.[5] They met the first 14-year-old victim over the phone. When she visited them, she was sexually assaulted, with the scene being filmed for blackmail.[2] According to police, she was raped up to 10 times by 3 to 24 high school boys in each occurrence, they apparently did it for no reason, just enjoyment and/or revenge from a breakup. [4] with at least 41 boys being involved over 11 months.[1] The girl was ordered to bring her 13-year-old sister and 16-year-old cousin to Miryang,[4] where the cousin was raped.[2] The original police report stated that the younger sister was sexually assaulted as well, but it may only have been a physical assault.[5] The boys were also accused of raping two other girls.[2] They allegedly extorted money from their victims.[6]

Han Gong-ju (Korean: 한공주) is a 2013 South Korean film written and directed by Lee Su-jin, starring Chun Woo-hee in the title role.[1][2][3][4][5][6] It was inspired by the infamous Miryang gang rape case of 2004.[7]

In a flashback to the past is shown where Hwa Ok is being gang raped in Gong-Ju's house. Before that, Gong Ju arrives at her house where Dong Yoon, Hwa Ok and at least 15 guys are hanging out and drinking. Dong Yoon is shown being bullied by his friends. Although Gong Ju does not drink, Dong Yoon insists she drink a beer that, unbeknownst to her, has been drugged. Gong Ju takes the drink as Dong Yoon reassures her that the guys will leave if she does so. Under the influence of the drug, she is gang raped as well. The “party” ends when Dong Yoon's father arrives and takes Dong Yoon, who was just in the midst of his turn of raping one of the girls, home; his father notices but ignores that the other girls is currently raped to.

Soon afterwards, Hwa Ok commits suicide by jumping off a bridge. The scene returns to the present where Gong Ju is sitting with the principal as he advises her he will discuss the situation with the board, not having known about her past. Mrs. Cho's boyfriend doubts her innocence and urges her to kick Gong Ju out of the house but Gong Ju leaves willingly, after telling them Hwa Ok was pregnant but she did not do anything to help her.

Gong Ju's friends at school find out about the rape, they text her to ask where she is and to say that it is not her fault. Eun Hee and her friends are horrified after seeing the video of Hwa Ok being raped, but she does not immediately answer a call from Gong Ju. Meanwhile, Gong Ju is seen walking towards a bridge where she jumps into the water and drowns; an underwater shadow is then shown swimming away, swimming much more adroitly than she ever managed. A background voice is heard asking Gong Ju why she wants to swim so badly. Gong Ju's response is “In case I want to start over because my mind could change.” Her friends are heard chanting and cheering her name as she drowns.

This type of thing is really rare and isn't normal. What happens is occasionally an abusive and brutal institution falls under the cracks of society. Asian culture values results, and will sometimes overlook an immoral organization as long as it is preforming up to standards until it is too late and something horrible happens. I bet there were all sorts of abuses happening in those schools e.g. teachers using gangs to control the students.
