How do I know when to stop fighting someone irl

I never been in a fight but when do you stop beating someone’s ass. Im afraid I’ll beat them to death or give them a concussion and i don't want to go to jail. People who’ve been in a fight tell me.

last year i got into 2 fights in my high school one with a guy a year older and the another with a nigga from my classroom, my recommendation would be only hit them after they hit you but try to provoke them a bit, use your left hand if right handed to distract so throw a couple fake jabs then you need to punch right over their nose or chin a straight punch, full force dont worry its not engough to kill anyone but it will most likely knock them out for a bit until adults come, but remember only hit if they hit you first, that way they get the legal trouble instead of you
