How do you measure your width?

I get confused when I try to measure how wide I am

Is this what I measure? Or do I measure from end to end?

stand next to the corner of a wall with your shoulder touching then get someone to grab a book on the other end and mark it then measure. measuring urself isnt acurate or just use calipers
