When I take a selfie from a short distance my face appears thin, if I took another photo with my arm elongated it appears much wider.

Also, when I take a picture of my face in the mirror it appears somewhat wide.. Now, which one is closest to reality? Is it the mirror one?

Ask your mom what she thinks, only way to know

I'd say mirror. My pics taken with a 90mm lens look way different than what I see in the mirror - my jaw is a lot wider on those pics.

"Studies have measured the cone of visual attention and found it to be about 55 degrees wide. On a 35mm full frame camera, a 43mm lens provides an angle of view of 55 degrees, so that focal length provides exactly the same angle of view that we humans have."
