For one thing, if you feel good enough about the relationship that memories are going to bring you lasting happiness, then you probably wouldn't want it to end, and if a relationship ends when you don't want it to, especially after years of traveling around the world, it's not going to be pleasant and all the memories will be soured and a source of endless pain. When I broke up with my ex, I remember someone asked me if we were still friends and I said "no" and this older guy, like 40s, was like "Of course you're not friends. You can't be lovers and then just be friends." I don't that's an absolute, but it's rare, especially if you were close. All my memories are poison.

Another thing is that humans are just never satisfied. Memories are never going to sustain you. My mom has dementia and my dad, to whom she's still married, and who is 77, wasted no time establishing an emotional affair with another woman. He's not sitting around remembering the good times. He wants more. It's never enough.

I spent the last 15 years traveling the world alone, and sometimes with a friend. This kept me excited and motivated that whole time. I'd always look forward to my next trip, and when I returned, I felt good literally for months after it. So, I was happy during trips and in between them.
