There are lots of people applying for jobs who can't code for shit. Even after graduating with a CS degree and working in the industry for a few years. To get a decent job, you just gotta skillmog them substantially. But you still need to practice answering technical questions or you will falter in the interview. It's one thing to solve problems from the comfort of your desk and another to do it in front of an interviewer under pressure.
Yes if looks are of importance to you it's best to stay put if the cost of living is low enough.
