They can make you look even uglier if you're already subhuman and can make some individual features (i.e. nose) appear 3x larger due to lense distortion.

You shouldnt look too different if you hold the selfie camera one arms length away

You probably look the same in the camera as in real life. You’re just not used to it because of the slight deviation from lens distortion compared to, say, the mirror.
