pros of making thai my language :

easier language to learn

already have about 100 hours in thai instruction

will be able to move to thailand and keep a chill lifestyle while continuing learning

cons :

will be limited to thailand postings

pros of learning mandarin :

generally speaking a more useful language to know

more posting potentials

can move to taiwan for a year to learn mandarin while waiting for an opening in the pipeline

will have to deal with coke weather season in taiwan

cons :

will require a year of FSI training in washington dc which means i have to live in burger land for a year around joggers

only con i can really think of. mandarin would be more beneficial in the long term however i would have to live a shit life for a year in washington dc

im surprised the fsi has korean listed at 2200 class hours alongside mandarin

i learned to speak fluent korean in a year during middle school

probably helped that i was already living in korea and still had a young brain

farsi users in the DOS/DHS are in surplus at the mid to senior levels due to involvement in middle east the past 2 decades

doubt there’s as much of a desire for new entries to learn it

The ROI from a few extra hundred hours of learning mandarin against Thai is definitely worth it by a big margin.
A year will feel like nothing tbh

is 2000 calories a deficit/enough to lose weight generally speaking?
yea assuming you’re a semi active person

15k daily steps on 2000 calories should be enough to lose weight

The cia already failed with trying to destabilize Russia & is moving onwards & onto greener pastures.

OP, consider the Balkan region& their associated languages. It’s a region ripe for intervention

Mandarin, but I wouldn't suggest learning in Taiwan. Taiwanese speak Mandarin like girly men. Don't want to pick it up from them. You know, I've never met a local in Hong Kong that wasn't also a Mandarin speaker. Hong Kong would be a nice place to learn. Or better yet, get you a 10 year 60 day visa for the mainland and just rent an apartment in Shenzhen. Just take a short bus or subway ride over to Hong Kong every two months. Easy as pie.

and should i do a degree program or go to a language course and the likes?

The problem with Shanghai is it's too Western. The running joke among expats in China is that those of us who live in Shanghai aren't living in the real China. Culturally there's truth to that, but that being said it's still an excellent place to learn Mandarin. I think you'd like it. Excellent for shopping as well as getting Western food products you might be used to that you can't really get anywhere else in China.

To tell you the truth, I think Shanghai might be the city best suited for you now that I think of it. Live somewhere near East Nanjing Road Station and you'll probably be pretty happy.

I really don't know about that. I just picked up the language outside of academia. Lol, actually brothel hopping and dating girls that couldn't speak English during my first 8 months is how I became functional. Depends if you want a piece of paper or not. If not then I'd just say take a language course and play with hookers. I say hookers because you being a foreigner probably won't be able to find too many normal girls who don't speak English in a city like Shanghai. The ones who can't speak English probably won't want to mess with you. Luckily for me my first city was Wenzhou.

My advice would be to mess with taxi drivers in the beginning. When I was first learning the language I would practice any new words I learned with taxi drivers. I would tell them bullshit stories just to use the words. Say I learned the word "wife" for instance and I would tell the taxi driver "my wife did this...my wife did that......." even though I was unmarried.

Look man, I've never been but I'll tell you right now that the city you want to go to if that's what you're looking for is Wuhan. It's an extremely "Chinese" city. It's in the South (less dickheads and racism in my experience). It's HUGE. And it's traditionally been a major transit hub in China for more than a hundred years. I'll also mention that everyone I ever met from Wuhan, except Tom (a manager at a school I worked at), I liked.

Chongqing and Chengdu would be two other great cities but the Sichuanese dialect is not fun to deal with. It's pretty unintelligible from Mandarin and if you a beginner you're gonna be very frustrated. The way they speak Mandarin too is a bit funny. I spent 5 months living in Chengdu when I was still a pretty fresh and some of the way they say things in Mandarin rubbed off on me. I've never been able to get rid of it. Sounds a little funny.

Learn it on ur own, if u know the hanja from korean then mandarin is literally the easiest language evER.

Thai is a dogshit deadend language and china will take over the world, insane for any career esp ciamaxxing spying on ccp, even the min wage jobs i applied to kicked me out of the interview because i didnt know chinese. Also, what the dude above said; been learning mandarin for a year and a half now, although learning is a stretch since im just converting characters from my native language brainlessly
