There are a decent amount of Sicilians who are gingers and they tan well (look at Miriam Leone). I don't think the gene for having red hair is pleiotropic and makes you necessarily more prone to sunburn. I think those are separate pathways entirely, it's just that they are so correlated (i.e. gingers tend to be Celtic and they have very pale skin).
