they do things modern films are afraid of doing for political or ideological reasons, they don't follow formulaic modern studio methods that are based on analysis of box office draw. this is why all these new films look the same and have the same editing and effects, they're all trying to replicate each other's financial success. take this scene for example, how many modern films have done a splat like that? closest i remember was the ending of dredd 2012. but this one looks much more gruesome and creatively shot.
