What is assortative mating?

Assortative mating is a non-random pattern of mate selection in which individuals with similar traits or characteristics, often phenotypic in nature, are more likely to choose each other as mates. This means that individuals with common characteristics, such as height, intelligence, or physical appearance, are more likely to form pairings or relationships.

The relationship between assortative mating and phenotype lies in the fact that individuals tend to select partners with similar phenotypic traits. For example, if tall individuals are more likely to choose tall partners, or highly intelligent individuals prefer highly intelligent partners, assortative mating based on these phenotypic traits can result in the following:

1. Trait Prevalence

Assortative mating can increase the frequency of specific traits within a population. For instance, if individuals with high levels of education tend to partner with others who also have high levels of education, it can contribute to the prevalence of highly educated individuals in the population.

2. Heritability

When assortative mating is based on heritable traits, it can affect the inheritance of these traits in offspring. This means that children of such pairs are more likely to inherit the same traits as their parents, potentially leading to a higher concentration of these traits in future generations.

3. Phenotypic Variation

On the other hand, assortative mating can also reduce phenotypic diversity in a population, as it limits the mixing of individuals with differing traits. This can lead to greater uniformity in certain characteristics.

4. Evolutionary Implications

Over time, assortative mating based on certain phenotypes can influence the evolution of a population. If specific traits are consistently favored in mate selection, it can drive the evolution of those traits and their increased prevalence in the population.
