I agree that there has to be a balance but there is. Great men do not have to be the fittest to be admired by other men or women. Napoleon, Cesar, you know who etc. were all very popular with women despite not being very attractive at all.

However I think you underestimate the impact of men and overestimate the impact of women. Men are always drawn to competition - it is in their nature. They don't just do it to impress women. Also you put to much blame on the women. It is in their nature to be this way to produce healthy attractive offspring. They also have a very nurturing side - a mother would rather die than see her sons going to war in search of glory. This is why I would say that women have a very pacifist side. On the other hand young women will usually shame men who refuse to join the army. In a monogamous society this has its justification but in the modern world this obviously does not work.
