Height experiment I did on Bumble & Badoo

I only took into account local, native girls. I ignored foreigners.

Why Bumble and Badoo?

Because both apps:
- show girls from the whole country
- have users’ height listed on their profiles

I was also curious, I hyphotesized from rule of thumb girls on Bumble will be taller because that app’s userbase seems to be predominantly middle class and over, most users attending universities. Meanwhile Badoo’s userbase is known to be of lower social classes, with lots of poorer and trashy girls. It’s a generlisation, but girls on Bumble tend to live in bigger cities, while Badoo is filled with a lot of rural ones.

I wrote down 289 girl’s height from their profile I came across on Bumble.

Average: 169cm
Minimum: 153cm
Maximum: 193cm
1st quartile (25%): 165cm
2nd quartile (50%): 169cm
3rd quartile (75%): 173cm

Bumble’s histogram:

Out of 289 girls, 12 were 180cm or above (every 24th).

As you can see from the quartiles, half of the girls fall between 165cm and 173cm.

The median is the same as the average, overall the data is more or less distributed normally, as it is expected from human height.

As you can see girls on Badoo were shorter on average by 2 centimeters, goes on to show even in the same country, social classes do differ considerably in height; and on Bumble these girls were from all over middle class, the best college graduates and persons of the the top social classes are even taller than this on average.

I intentionally went for girls’ height only for two reasons:
- didn’t feel like swiping through hundreds of dudes
- guys almost always cap about their height, adding God know how many cm s extra

Girls have very little reason to overshoot their height, afterall height is the most dimorphic feature and no girls want to be bigger than already is even by a cm.

Before someone mentions it, yes, everyone knows their height. If not from else, from compulsory physical exams in high school. Some just choose to lie about it, but once again, unlike dudes, girls have very little reason to.

If you google the average height of Hungary, you will get:

176/177cm for males and 164cm for females.

Bumble’s average came out to be 169cm,
while Badoo’s is 167cm.

Now again, I don’t have data on male height, but it doesn’t really matter, since irrespective of location, globally everywhere the average male is known to be taller by about 12-13cm than their respective female counterparts.

By following this logic, my guess for the actual average height for college aged Hungarian males is not 177cm but more like 182-183cm (6’). For Badoo, that is around 179cm.

This seems to more in line with my real life observations, I mingle around crowded places all the time and sub 180cm guys are visibly shorter than average in cities.

The reason “official data” is shorter than reality is due to a mix of a heavily aging population:

And Gypsies. Official census data shows they are only 1-2% of the population, but in reality they are closer to 9%, even more in the youngest demographics (I won’t disclose from where I know this number). Both of these bring the average on paper down, but make no mistake, your competition as a middle class guy is harsher.

Similarly, Gypsies significantly bring down averages throughout the Balkan (Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria etc.). Immigrants do the same in Western Europe and Scandinavia. Do you seriously believe the German data when there are millions of Turks living there? What about London? Amsterdam?
