Is using shampoo and conditioner necessary?

Yes. Coat your hands in oil or butter and then try to wash it off with just water- thats why shampoo is necessary.
It doesn't need to be a sulphate free shampoo (in fact a lot of my colleagues are of the opinion that you should really only avoid sulphates if you have a direct contraindication) and depending on how short your hair is you might be able to not use conditioner.
But in short, yes, wash your damn hair.

try a shampoo with the least amount of cancer in it. you notice cancer when you don't understand the ingredient's name. oh and even if it says 'all natural organic no alcohol sulfates' it doesn't mean shit, look at the ingredients. my sister and I use a soap made for washing hair it's pretty good

Cause of the covid shit I was able to try just using water on my hair.

First two weeks my hair looked greasy but now it looks & feels a lot better imo. I just wash it 2-3 times longer then I used to.

I really don't know anything about hair but it's probably worth a try if you have soft-type hair. Doubt it'd do anything if your hairs coarse.

just make sure you do it right, because it's not about being a bum who doesn't wash his hair, you must incorporate a routine for It to work

But I use a saltwater spray with castor oil to style hair
So maybe this oil works as conditioner
