Hair height is super important. While there're Chads who look great with buzzcuts—

—not everyone is blessed with top-tier bone structure aesthetics. Some people are skullcels. Some have long midfaces. I happen to have both. Guys with long midfaces generally benefit from having hair that's long on the top. Guys with brachycephalic heads benefit from having hair that's short on the sides. If you have both a long midface and a brachycephalic head shape (like me), you should get hair that's short on the sides and long on the top.
I haven't gotten a haircut in a while, so my hair is dogshit, but I can show you the importance of top hair height. This is me with my default hair, which is quite tall on the top of my head:
When I wet my hair and push it down, this happens:
Holy shit…I just ogremaxxed. I look like an ape with low hair height.
Tall hair looks way better on me:
That's the importance of hair height, bros.
