What are signs of showing off?

I want to remain humble and not fish for attention, so in all seriousness what are things that I can do to stop seeking approval and validation from others who I know don't care about me?

Count the number of times they self depreciate (unironically not in an attempt to attention seek) and self praise

If its not equal theyre putting out how they wanna be perceived on purpose

this makes sense. i feel like i do this but out of fear. its like its an impulse for me and my mom trying to indoctrinate me into it doesn't help either.
