In the U.K. in almost every uni all the first years and many post-grad students live on campus in halls (dorms). 2nd and 3rd year undergrad students almost all live within an area of their uni town no more than a 20 minute walk from campus.

Basically you've got a small area filled with people your age which is what helps with social aspects/ the culture of the university itself. I've known people who commuted in to uni and their social life suffered for it tbh
