A dentist in my country (somewhere in Western Europe):
- Makes between €5k to €8k as his first salary (AFTER taxes), and this is the lowest salary he'll ever know as he can specialize in dental implants & set up his own office, which will make him earn between €20k to €50k/mo
- Has a flexible schedule. The first salary I mentioned can be reached by only working three days a week
- Doesn't need connections to succeed unlike many other fields like Finance or Law, which are dominated by a certain caste
- Has insane job stability
- Is respected by his peers (he's a doctor after all)
This is also one of the only jobs that I know of (other than software engineering, if you forget about the frequent and arbitrary layoffs) where you benefit from an INSANE amount of flexibility and freedom, on top of being stable.
You can work 1 day a week and still earn €2,5k/mo (which is still higher than the median salary in my country, around €1,9k/mo), and live decently.
You can work for 6 months and decide to travel the next 6 months.
Drawbacks:
- Takes about 6 years to study & become a dentist. That's still short when you know most people study up to grad school which takes 5 years.
- The exam that grants you access to your 2nd year of med school is tough, but if you get past this ordeal it's impossible to fuck up the rest of your studies.
- You'll need to work on people whose teeth look fucked up. You'll get used to it though + you have a mask and gloves.
I think it's worth it. It's a sacrifice like any other but instead of spending years on a business (which is also respectable) at least you'll land in a career that'll give you a stable income and plenty of time to pursue your other interests while not being exploited.
The average dentist salary in my country is about €200k/year.
There's even one psychopath dentist who devitalized & extracted hisclients... patients' teeth so he could insert crowns and make bank off of them (he charged between €1700 and €2200 for each tooth he had to replace). He made millions and only got caught because he exploited the state's healthcare refund system. He made millions off of this. Don't be like him though
