There are two theories, the first is that those with unique features may have harmful mutations. You can find more info about this theory here:

But check out the wiki article on averageness for other phycological explanations. Essentially there are phycological hypothesis for why humans will be attracted most to the average person, of all the people they see in their day to day life.

But I would still recommend lean maxing, etc. because even if women are mostly attracted to the average male, for certain looks that have a lower supply (less people) than demand, the women that are attracted will be far more eager to date you. Supply demand mechanics are powerful in dating.

There's also basic stuff like height, health, and strength, that are biological attraction switches, so don't take it to mean that I'm saying average fully explains everything. It's complicated.
