To authenticate a hadith, scholars look at the biography and date of birth/death first to see if it is historically accurate, then for each narrator they look at: whether the narrator was a muslim, had reached puberty and was known to be wise and trustworthy, was not an open sinner.

Then they check if the hadith contradicts the Quran or not and if the language matches the one used at the time of the prophet.
